Did you know that each year in Texas there are thousands of accidents involving road rage? In 2022 alone, there were 2,510 road rage-related accidents in the state, according to data we analyzed from the Texas Department of Transportation.
Here at Ramsey Law, we understand that car crashes, whether minor or serious, can have a large impact on your life. But road rage-related car crashes can be particularly unsettling because of the heightened emotions involved. We collaborated with data visualization agency 1Point21 Interactive and conducted a new study to determine which cities and zip codes in Texas have the most road rage-related car crashes.
In the interactive map below, we can see where all 2,510 road rage crashes occurred in 2022.
Road rage stems from aggressive driving. Aggressive driving is defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as “The operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property.” This can include actions such as:
The NHTSA defines road rage as “angry and violent behaviors at the extreme of the aggressive driving continuum.” Act of road rage may include:
An important distinction between aggressive driving and road rage is that former is a traffic violation, while the latter, depending on the action, can be labeled as a criminal offense.
Naturally, we see more road rage crashes in the larger cities with the highest populations due to high volumes of traffic. Being stuck in traffic can increase stress, which can cause people to react aggressively when they otherwise would not have.
Below, the table shows us the total number of road rage crashes by city in Texas.
The following table show every city where each of the 2,510 road rage crashes occurred.
There were 27 cities that had ten or more road rage-related crashes, while 294 cities had under ten over the course of 2022. Eight of the top ten cities with the highest number of road rage crashes are in the top ten most populated cities in Texas.
This does not necessarily mean they are the most dangerous. These cities likely have a higher total number of crashes due to higher population numbers.

However, we can’t just say these are the most dangerous cities simply because there are more accidents. It is important to take into consideration the overall population of the cities compared to the number of accidents to get a better idea of how dangerous each location is.
We took all cities with 10 or more road rage accidents and looked at the population in those cities, in order to determine the rate of road rage crashes in each location.
The city with the highest rate of road rage crashes was Midlothian, at 29.49 crashes per 100,000 people. San Antonio was second at 20.49 and New Braunfels was third at 15.99.
The table below shows the number of crashes in each city, population size, and rate of crashes per 100,000 people.

Road rage accidents can be prevented, but all parties involved must refrain from acting out emotionally. If you find yourself in a situation where another driver is displaying agitated behavior it is important to refrain from reacting emotionally.
